To the Fans:
“My new album finally dropped today! The album is called ‘Terminally iLL’ because it’s intended to shine a light in dark times. It’s easy to make angry or sad music, but it’s really difficult to create happiness. This one took a long time because I tried to cram as much positivity and gratitude into it as possible. These songs are here to be your alarm clock, your road trip anthem, your secret happy dance, the soundtrack to a mountaintop high five with the squad. Please listen to these songs and know you’re never alone. I’m trying to make as much of an impact with this album as possible, so please spread it far and wide, and if any of this resonates with you, please consider supporting this project by entering the contest or buying the album on Beatport.”

The Making of Terminally iLL
•‘More Tea’ uses samples of Taiwanese tea farmers as part of an ‘urban teahouse remix project’ forging a bridge to the asian EDM scene. It led to connections with Jason Hou and Sonia Calico, who went on to have her own release on Muti Music.

•‘Shine’ featured long time collaborator Masia One and was recorded in Bali during ill.Gates international music pilgrimage in 2016, which spanned 9 countries in 4 months. Most of these songs were written abroad. ill + Masia collaborated on the lyrics.

•‘Paradise Won’ was written at the Paradise One music retreat in November 2015 in front of a live audience. The recording of this is available at ProducerDJ.Club. The day also hosted workings on rap and beatboxing from Dub FX, and Hugo the Pout, which ill.Gates attended. He asked them to contribute vocals to his workshop tune, and they agreed only upon condition that ill.Gates rap a verse as well. The resulting track ‘Paradise Won’ is the first track to feature an ill.Gates vocal.

•‘Orange Sky’ was recorded at the Red Bull studios in Cape Town, South Africa in 2013 and there is a short documentary about it here.

•‘Flying’ was made entirely on a live stream, which can be watched at ProducerDJ.Club

•‘Nitro’ by ill.Gates + Mimosa uses nitrous oxide to create organic pitch shift effects on the vocals.

•‘Is You Is’ was created with ill.Gates students Matter, Mindset, Spiderhound and ArKo and samples a public domain vocal from one of ill.Gates father’s vinyl records. ill.Gates father is a full time professional guitarist and taught him much of what he knows as a musician. This track therefore represents 3 generations of knowledge exchange.

•‘WorkFlow’ feat The DropStarz is a feminist booty tracks, whose lyrics are all about how dope it is when women hustle and make lots of art. It is charting the best on beatport.

•‘Unsung Heroes’ features a sample of Mario Savio protesting at Berkeley on the Sproul Hall steps, delivering a speech which is widely considered to be one of the best in American Political Oratory History. The Sproul Hall steps were subsequently renamed the Mario Savio Steps to honor his speech.
